Continuing from Portrush following the North Coast road, one will come to one of the most photographed landmarks in Northern Ireland (after the Giants Causeway, of course). The Mussendum Temple is located near Castlerock in County Londonderry and overlooks the Downhill Strand. One can see Donegal to the West and Portrush, Portstewart and Fair Head to the east.
The temple was built in 1785 as a summer library. The architecture was apparently based on the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, near Rome. The constant erosion of the coast required the National Trust to step in to protect this temple from plunging 120 feet into the strand below.
This area is suitable for a picnic in the grounds when open however there is an admission charge. You can also walk through the grounds and gardens of the ruins of Downhill Castle (or known as the Downhill House mansion). There is a walking trail for any walking enthusiasts.
