I came across Islandmagee quite by accident; we had spent so much time in Carrickfergus that it seemed silly to continue up the coast too much only to turn back and head back to Belfast for our dinner. So, on our way to Larne we saw the turn-off for Islandmagee, and thought, why not? Were we ever glad we did!
Islandmagee is technically a peninsula, contrary to the name, but it is a beautiful place for driving, cycling, walking and of course has its own golf course! The island is only 8 miles long and includes rugged cliffs, gorgeous coastal views and sandy beaches. The area is loaded with B&Bs and self-catering accommodation, so you can take the time to explore this lovely area. There is also a ferry from Larne direct to the island.
Settlements on the peninsula include Ballystrudder, Portmuck, Mill Bay and Ballykeel, while Browns Bay is a popular tourist attraction. It is the site of Northern Irelands main power station Ballylumford but do not let that stop you from experiencing its wonderful charm and quaintness.
Of interest is the Ballylumford Dolmen which is near the northwest tip of the peninsula near the power station. This dolmen consists of four upright stones with a heavy capstone and a fallenstone with the structure. Artifacts recovered from under the dolmen suggest it appears to have stood over a burial chamber in ancient times roughly for 4000 years. The Ballylumford Dolmen is on the B90 road between Mll Bay and Ballylumford.
