Guide to The City of Lisburn and Surroundng Area in Northern Ireland
The city of Lisburn, approximately 8 miles from Belfast city limits on the M1 route to Dublin, has a long and varied history; the city has just celebrated its 400 year anniversary in 2009.
Lisburn was founded in the early 17th Century and its name in Irish is Lios na gCearbhach or Lisnagarvey, which means the "fort of gamesters". Although Lisburn was only granted the status of a city in 2002, Lisburn is a refined and modern city whose limits include the beautiful Lagan Valley and many beautiful towns and villages including Moira, Hillsborough, Dromara, Glenavy and Dunmurry. Hillsborough is home to the Queens accommodation, Hillsborough Castle, when she stays in Northern Ireland and also is a great place for visiting dignitaries.
Whether you want the bustle and great retail experience of a modern city (a visit to the shopping area of Bow Street is a must!) or a beautiful jaunt through the countryside or walk by the Lagan, Lisburn and its surrounding area is certainly worth a visit when you are in Northern Ireland.
