If you are from anywhere in the UK, Europe or North America, you do not need a visa to come to Northern Ireland as a tourist. For North Americans, you cannot stay for more than 6 months and you cannot work. If you wanted to work you should consult the UK Home Office website for details on the various visas available (website address is below).
You should note that there are not fixed border checkpoints if you are travelling from the Republic of Ireland to Northern Ireland. Irish Immigration may board the bus or train if you are travelling from Northern Ireland to the Republic of Ireland and ask for identification which you are required to furnish. Although there is not a physical checkpoint, it is still illegal to cross the border if you do not have the proper visa.
Passport
Your passport must be valid for 6 months from the date of entry if you are from North America.
For further details contact the Home Office website at www.homeoffice.gov.uk as the UK visa process can be quite complicated.
Other
If you lose your passport or it gets stolen, you should contact your nearest consulate for information. You will most likely need to report it to the police for a police reference number before you can apply for a new passport (they will require this when you apply).
